The Colosseum, Roman Forum, the Parthenon, and more exploring around Rome
We have continued to walk for our transportation around Rome and have stumbled upon many fountains, piazzas, churches, and statues that weren’t on our list of places to visit, but still have been very cool to see. Yesterday we visited the Roman Forum and Colosseum and today we saw the Parthenon. We also took time to explore and play at the shady Villa Borghese park and Carter was thrilled to bring along his Barcelona soccer ball that he got earlier in the trip and happily kicked it along the shaded paths. We met Kyle, Joy, and Landon for one more stroll around Piazza Navona before they left yesterday to get to the airport. We have one last dinner with Granzie, Grammy, and Grampa before we split the aya tomorrow. We have enjoyed lots of yummy foods in Rome. Here are some of our favorites:
- pasta dishes including ravioli, cannelloni, spaghetti carbonara and also a yummy red sauce that I can never remember how to say, gnocchi, tiramisu, Italian bread with fresh butter or olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We also love these tiny pizza shops that sell pizza by the kilogram. You pick your type and size. They heat it for you and you have a hot, inexpensive lunch in 5 minutes!
We have also enjoyed that water fountains that are all over town for filling water bottles or splashing your face on a hot day.
The kids have been both awed and bored by the history, but if we take it in small bits we have all enjoyed marveling at the Roman structures and vast history around us. It is also interesting being in Rome after Greece because there are some structures that have Greek architectural characteristics and statues of the Greek gods. We also see obliques with Egyptian writing and images all around town.
