Santorini, Day at Sea, and Naples

 On Friday, we arrived in Santorini, Greece.  We went on a tour where we rode on a traditional boat to a nearby volcano. We hiked to the top of the volcano and had a beautiful view. Then we sailed to a nearby island with sulfurous hot water springs and swam in the warmed ocean. We couldn’t put our heads under water because minerals from the spring were too strong. Then after the tour ended we went back to Fira and rode the cable car to the top of the island. The main city was built on cliffs overlooking the sea. It was beautiful! We ate a Greek lunch in a roof top restaurant and walked down the steep pathway back to the shore where we boarded a small boat (tender) back to our ship. 

The next day was a day at sea. We relaxed on the ship with the family. We spent time on our balcony, played with cousin Landon, swam, took a towel folding class, watched a live onboard production of Beauty and the Beast, and completed a Disney scavenger hunt using the moving pictures on the boat. 

The next day Carter tested negative for COVID and he and Ben got to join us again! We went with Grammy and Grampa to Pompeii and got to explore the ruins. The town was covered with ash in 79AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried for many years. The town was very well preserved and it was so cool to see the early Roman construction, complete with a bath house, plazas, theater, and engineering for running water. After visiting Pompeii we returned to Naples to explore and had pizza for lunch from the town credited with creation of the Margarita Pizza. 

We had dinner together on the ship as our whole group for the first time since the first night at sea. It was our last day on the boat and we got packed up and prepared for debarking.

Rome

 We arrived in Rome on Monday and have been busy walking and eating our way through Rome. We have walked over 15,000 steps each day and have been awed by the art and history that is our on nearly every block. There are fountains, statues, and piazzas around every corner. We’ve also seen sections of old aqueducts and “new buildings” from the 15-1600s. We toured the Vatican on Tuesday and were blown away by the amount of art in the Vatican museums, the Sistine chapel ceiling, and the enormous St Peters Bailica. There has been rain every day and we have been soaked a few times, but we dry out again and appreciate the cooler temperatures the rain brings.  The Vatican museums- amazingly decorated rooms from floor to ceiling. Many of which used to be private living quarters of the Pope. We kept looking up to marvel at the ceilings and then realized the floors were very cool too . We made it!

 Our travel all went smoothly and we made it to Spain Monday evening. We traveled south from the Barcelona airport to Sitges to spend our first day of vacation at the beach.  We were all tired but enjoyed a delicious paella for our first dinner. We were up by 5am and got to have a  peaceful morning at the beach. Then in the afternoon we moved to Barcelona and got checked into our air BNB, which has an amazing view of La Segrada Familia. We walked around our new neighborhood and then met up with my parents and Kyle’s family. Here are a few details the kids want to share from our first few days: -There are lots of statues and pigeons -Carter counted 9 different modes of transportation we’ve been on so far -TIRED! Switzerland

 We have spent the last three days staying in Taverne, Switzerland with Patsy and her family. Patsy lived with my family as an exchange student for 10 months when I was in 3rd grade and I have not seen her in about 33 years. It is my great pleasure to be able to visit her Switzerland, to see her again, and to meet each other’s families. She has been an amazing host and we have felt spoiled. We have had amazing meals, great company, and so much fun!! Switzerland is so beautiful and we are loving some time in nature. We got to see two castles in Bellinzona on Saturday, swam in Lago Maggiore, hiked in Valle Verzasca today, and swam in the river in Valle Verzasca. We also visited Locarno, a town on Lago Maggiore. We are in the southern part of Switzerland where the primary language is Italian. It has been a full but amazing few days! Oh, and in any spare time the kids are running over to the park next to Patsy’s house to play. It has a zip line and they think it is the best park ever! ...
